Non-Communicable Diseases: The Silent Epidemic
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are chronic conditions that are not passed from person to person. They include cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. In Malawi, NCDs are increasingly becoming a major cause of illness and death.
The Growing Burden
NCDs now account for a significant and growing proportion of deaths in Malawi. Risk factors such as unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and harmful alcohol consumption are becoming more common, particularly in urban areas.
Diabetes
Diabetes occurs when the body cannot properly process blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is largely preventable through lifestyle changes. Warning signs include excessive thirst and hunger, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, and slow-healing wounds.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
High blood pressure is often called the "silent killer" because it usually has no symptoms. Regular blood pressure checks are essential. Risk factors include high salt intake, obesity, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and family history.
Cancer
Cancer awareness is growing in Malawi, with cervical cancer being the most common cancer among women. The HPV vaccine is now available for girls aged 9-14 and can prevent most cervical cancers. Regular screening is important for early detection.
Prevention Strategies
Many NCDs can be prevented or managed through healthy eating with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, regular physical activity of at least 30 minutes daily, avoiding tobacco in all forms, limiting alcohol consumption, regular health check-ups, and managing stress effectively.
